The Business Growth West Midlands (BGWM) Supply Chain Transition programme is on a mission to empower ambitious SMEs in the West Midlands with a robust support package to tap into new supply chain prospects. This strand of the programme targets dynamic sectors in Health and Med Tech, Manufacture of Future Housing and Smart Energy Systems, and is designed to propel businesses towards securing new supply chain orders in these sectors.

We highlight below the Health & Med Tech sector of this programme:

Health and Med Tech Supply Chain in the West Midlands

The fusion of Health Tech and Med Tech has created a dynamic ecosystem that caters to both physical medical devices and software-based health solutions.

The West Midlands is poised to revolutionise the sector with cutting-edge Health & Med Tech solutions and outlines an opportunity to increase this sector by an additional £400 million to £430 million by 2030. This growth is expected to create between 5,300 and 5,900 new jobs in and represents strong potential for all those involved in the local Health & Med Tech supply chain.

The Role of Supply Chains

Transitioning and entering a new market sector is much like embarking on a journey to an unfamiliar destination. For small, ambitious local businesses seeking growth, understanding the broader supply chain in Health & Med Tech is critical to finding their place and identifying the right customers to target.

The supply chain in the Health Tech and Med Tech sector serves as a vital link between manufacturers, suppliers and healthcare providers. It facilitates the seamless flow from the Prime Contractors / Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1, 2 and 3 suppliers.

The supply chain structure includes:

Prime Contractors or OEMs: Large healthcare technology and medical device companies responsible for designing, manufacturing and integrating health solutions.

Tier 1 suppliers: Provide high-value components, subsystems and advanced technologies that OEMs use in their final products.

Tier 2 suppliers: Provide essential subcomponents, raw materials and specialised services that are integrated by Tier 1 suppliers into Health & Med Tech products.

Tier 3 Suppliers: Provide logistics, basic materials and auxiliary services that support the delivery and maintenance of medical and digital health products.

Programme Focus

The Business Growth West Midlands Supply Chain Transition programme focuses on businesses that demonstrate ambition for growth and scalability, willingness to engage in B2B supply chains, interest in adopting innovative ways of working and capacity for adapting processes to meet industry needs.

The aim is to identify businesses that can contribute to the advancement of healthcare innovation and provide them with tailored one-to-one support to aid their growth and integration within the supply chain.
