The Inclusive Supply Chain programme supports local, underrepresented SMEs in preparing to join supply chains by improving their skills to meet the requirements of larger businesses. By collaborating with local, regional and national buyers who aim to enhance their supply chains, this initiative creates opportunities for smaller businesses to connect with larger buyers and secure new contracts.

One of our participants, Harry Spencer of Treehab Arboricultural Contractors , shares his experience and journey through the programme.

Treehab Arboricultural Contractors specialises in professional tree care and management services for residential and commercial properties in London. Their team of certified arborists offers comprehensive solutions that prioritise environmental preservation, safety and landscape enhancement. Utilising advanced equipment and adhering to industry standards ensures efficient and safe project completion. Their customer-focused approach and expertise make them a trusted choice for all arboricultural needs.

Many SMEs face significant challenges when applying for tenders, and this is the reason Harry joined the programme to overcome these obstacles. During 2024, he received support from his expert business adviser, Natalia Gruzina. One of the biggest challenges for SMEs is feeling overwhelmed by the volume of applications, which makes it difficult to stand out. Additionally, they may struggle to fully understand complex questions and requirements, leading to incomplete or inaccurate submissions. Limited resources and time constraints further add pressure, making it hard for business owners to dedicate the necessary effort to a tender application. A lack of experience in the tendering process can also result in missed opportunities and errors in submissions.

Thanks to the support Harry received, he has bidded on several tenders, safeguarded 10 jobs and created four new positions.

We found the support from the Inclusive Supply Chain programme incredibly helpful in understanding how to write winning tenders. Attending the ‘How to Tender’ masterclasses and the Camden Procurement Club event was particularly beneficial because they allowed us to engage with the local council and better understand their purchasing behaviour.

The one-to-one sessions with our business adviser were invaluable, providing tailored guidance that helped us navigate the tendering process. Additionally, the virtual and face-to-face support made it easy to stay engaged and ask questions as needed. As a result of the skills we gained, we feel more confident approaching larger buyers and have seen success with our recent tender application.”
